Portable, High-Performance Panadapter PX3

Our new PX3 Panadapter adds a visual dimension to signal hunting, with fast, real-time spectrum and waterfall displays of band activity. Its small size and weight make it ideal for travel or field use.

The PX3 is fully integrated with the Elecraft KX3, utilizing its serial control port and RX I/Q signals*. The panadapter tracks the KX3’s VFO frequency and filter settings via on-screen cursors. You can point and click on signals by rotating and tapping the PX3’s SELECT knob.

With its very wide dynamic range and frequency span of up to 200 kHz, the PX3 offers better performance than most PC sound cards. It’s also one of the most sensitive panadapters available, detecting signals down to the noise floor of the KX3. A PC or Mac can still be connected to the KX3 (via the PX3) for use with logging and control programs.

 
Advanced Features and Signal Processing

PX3 features include multi-pass signal averaging to pull out weak signals, peak detection to show total activity on the band, adjustable reference level, and amplitude range scaling. There’s also a full set of programmable switches to access often-used settings.

The PX3 has a wide supply voltage range (8-15 V) and low current drain (typ. 140 mA @ 13.8 V). It includes a comprehensive manual, and is available factory assembled or as a modular, no-soldering kit.

Planned future features include:
 CW/RTTY/PSK text display
 Use of the built-in USB port with a keyboard or flash drive
 SVGA monitor output option

* The PX3 uses the KX3’s baseband RX I/Q signals. It is not compatible with the 8.2-MHz I.F. signal from the K3.

A PC can work well, assuming it's fitted with a high-performance sound card, and that you're careful with cables and system grounding. This is sometimes hard to do, especially in a portable situation.

But the PX3 has a true 200-kHz span, and in most cases it will out-perform sound cards in terms of dynamic range. The PX3 also has very low noise thanks to an optimal choice of A-to-D converter (most of them have in-band noise humps that come up above the noise floor). It also has special input circuitry that rejects common-mode noise between the RX I/Q jacks on the radio and the PX3, without the need for isolation transformers.

Beyond that, there are some operators who prefer to have the spectral display right there where the action is, next to the radio. Turning on the PC can then be optional. The PC can still be used with the PX3 since we provide a way to daisy-chain both the control port (ACC1) and RX I/Q signals.

If you haven’t updated your KX3 firmware before, see FIRMWARE UPGRADES in your KX3 Owner’s manual for instructions. If you have already connected your PX3 to your KX3, you can update the KX3 firmware without disconnecting them as described under Updating KX3 Firmware on page 23 of this manual.

PX3s have started shipping

PX3-F orders started shipping this week. We are currently shipping PX3-F domestic orders from 4/4/14.

We will be slowly ramping up over the next few weeks. Prior to shipping you will receive an email to confirm your order. PX3-K and international orders will begin shipping within the next 2-3 weeks.

New orders placed now will ship in mid-late October.

We appreciate your patience and ask that you not contact sales or support to find out your place in line. This slows down are processing and we want to get these out as quickly as possible.

We are unable to give you an exact place or shipping date at this time.
Order dates will be updated on the status page as we email. Remember the early days have the most orders per day and will take longer to get through.

During this time we will not be able to ship orders. Our last day of shipping will be Wednesday, Sept. 10 and we will resume shipping
